FRIDAY, 18 OCTOBER, 2013
During the record attempt between Trieste and Valletta for the Medot Sailing Trophy that started on 14 October at 8:02 am, Esimit Europa 2 had technical issues that prevented it from concluding the challenge. On 17 October at 4:30 am, after a few hours of wind blowing with 30 knots, south of the coast of Calabria the wind had eased. Winds were light and fluky at the time, ranging from 3 to 8 knots. A sudden wind change forced Esimit Europa 2 to tack with full main and code 0 sails. A few moments after the tack was completed, the top 3 meters of the rig broke off for the reasons that are yet to be determined. The Esimit Sailing Team therefore decided to abandon the record attempt. Given that the yacht was still far from reaching Malta, there was not enough time for repairs in time for the start of the Rolex Middle Sea Race. The Esimit Europa 2 yacht had therefore withdrawn its participation from the 2013 edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race.

On Monday, 14 October at 8:02 am CEST, the Esimit Sailing Team set sail from Trieste (Italy) towards Valletta (Malta), with the aim of breaking the passage record for the Medot Sailing Trophy, which stands at 68 hours and 42 minutes. The approximately 700-nautical-mile-long passage between both cities is open to all classes and recognized by the World Sailing Speed Record Council. The trophy, established by Esimit Europa, unites two cities, two regattas – the Barcolana and the Rolex Middle Sea Race – and two yacht clubs – the "Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano" and the "Royal Malta Yacht Club".

During the early hours of 17 October, the Esimit Sailing Team decided to abandon the record attempt due to technical issues which did not allow Esimit Europa 2 to conclude the challenge. Also, given that the yacht is still far from reaching Malta, there is not enough time for repairs in time for the start of the Rolex Middle Sea Race. Therefore, the Esimit Sailing Team has decided to withdraw from the Rolex Middle Sea Race – its last challenge of the season.

The Esimit Europa 2 yacht has therefore concluded its 2013 sailing season, achieving nine victories at nine attended regattas – the Rolex Fastnet Race being the season’s highlight. Since its christening in 2010, Esimit Europa 2 has all together attended 28 regattas and won all of them, moreover it has set six course records.
