One of the largest single start sailing races in the world is the Barcolana regatta. Every season it takes place on the second Sunday in October in the Gulf of Trieste and on the two Southern turns sails into the Slovenian sea. It has a long lasting tradition, which began in 1969 with 51 boats competing for what nowadays became a prestigious trophy. The uniqueness of the race shows in enabling sailing enthusiasts to compete against professional racing teams. The devoted attention of hundreds of thousands of spectators has for the past three years been on Esimit Europa 2, which set the current course record in 2010, also took line honours in 2011 and accomplished a hat-trick by taking line honours in 2012, in tough weather conditions with very light winds, as well.
