KIELER WOCHE
[22. – 30. June]
A week of sailing and cultural happening with long lasting tradition, as in 2013 Kiel, the major German maritime city, hosts the 131st edition of the largest sailing event in the world. Located on the Baltic Sea in the heart between the natural beauty Kiel Fjord, and the busiest artificial waterway in the world connecting the Baltic and North Seas, Kiel week is therefore a perfect junction of cultures.
The sailing part of the week takes place in the center of the city, starting from the Kiel Yacht Club which organizes the whole weekly happening in collaboration with the Norddeutscher Regattaverein, the Hamburger Sailing Club, and the Verein Seglerhaus am Wannsee.
5000 sailors on 2000 yachts from 50 different countries entered competition among 47 sailing events at some more than 450 race starts on eleven various courses. The whole week, however, combined 2000 different cultural and sports events and attracted 3 million guests from all over the world.
Kieler Woche represented Esimit Europa 2’s first journey to northern Europe. It proved successful, as its European crew accomplished a monohull course record on Welcome Race and took the overall victory at Kieler Woche 2013.
