More than just an Outstanding Sailing Project

Races 2014

[12 October]

The city of Trieste is a cradle of central European culture and its citizens are believed to be enthusiastic sailors, which is year after year proven at the regattas in the Gulf of Trieste, leading with Barcolana. The regatta is named after the village of Barcola and is a historical sailing race, established in 1969. It is organized by the Società velica di Barcola e Grignano. The uniqueness of the race shows in enabling sailing enthusiasts to compete against professional racing teams. The regatta is accompanied by a week long program, based on sports, entertainment and cultural activities that attract thousands of visitors. The main event – Barcolana regatta – traditionally takes place on the second Sunday in October when more than 1500 yachts gather at the single starting line under the Victory lighthouse in Trieste.

As the Esimit Europa project started by blurring the borders between Italy and Slovenia in 1995, Barcolana has a special meaning to the bordering countries. The regatta on the two southern turns also sails into the Slovenian sea. In this year’s 46th edition of the Barcolana regatta Esimit Europa project enters into partnership with the organizers to propose a “Barcolana Challenge - Medot Trophy”– a special introductory race, organized in the friendly and sport spirit of this historic race for all 13 category winners from the previous edition of Barcolana.

Esimit Europa 2 has won line honours at all previously attended races and is the current course record holder.
